Here's what's happening and how to fix it.
Why Joint Sand Washes Out in Florida
Standard jointing sand — the loose sand that most paver installations were originally set with — is stabilized only by compaction and gravity. There's nothing binding the sand particles together. Florida's rainy season delivers intense, high-volume rainfall events — tropical downpours that can deposit 2+ inches of rain per hour — that flow across paver surfaces and directly into the joints, flushing the unbound sand particles with them. This erosion happens rapidly during the heaviest storms and gradually during every rainfall throughout the 5-month rainy season.
The result is progressive: first the joints shallow out, then weeds find enough exposed soil to germinate, then ant colonies use the loose joint material as a construction zone, and finally individual pavers begin to shift without the lateral support that packed joint sand provides. Left unaddressed, advanced joint sand loss leads to paver sinking, heaving, and surface instability that requires full reinstallation of affected sections.
The Permanent Solution: Polymeric Sand
Polymeric sand is the material that prevents this cycle entirely when properly installed. It's a blend of fine sand and polymer binders that, when activated with water, bind the sand particles together into a solid, cohesive joint fill that resists washing, weed germination, and ant infiltration. Properly installed polymeric sand in paver joints:
- Resists erosion from Florida's intense rainfall and irrigation
- Creates a surface that weed seeds cannot penetrate to reach the soil below
- Eliminates the loose material that ants use to establish colonies in joints

The Correct Sequence for Paver Restoration
Polymeric sand installation is most effective when done as part of a comprehensive paver cleaning and sealing service — the sequence matters:
- Professional cleaning first — Pavers must be thoroughly cleaned of algae, staining, joint weed material, and any remaining loose sand before new sand is installed. Polymeric sand installed on dirty pavers traps contamination in the joints.
- Joint preparation — Remaining old sand and weed material is removed from joints to the appropriate depth. Joints must be clean and debris-free to accept new sand properly.
- Polymeric sand installation — New polymeric sand is swept into the joints, compacted, excess swept off, and the surface is blown clean of all surface residue before activation. Surface residue that cures with the polymeric sand creates an unsightly haze that's difficult to remove.
- Water activation — The sand is misted with water in controlled applications to activate the polymer binders. Over-saturating during activation washes polymers out of the joint before they can bind.
