Rust Stains on Gutters in Florida: What's Causing Them and How to Remove Them

Orange or rust-brown staining streaking down the exterior fascia below your gutters, or spreading across the driveway and walkway beneath the drip edge, is a common problem across Tampa Bay. Most homeowners assume their gutters themselves are rusting — and sometimes that's correct. But in many cases the staining source is the gutter fasteners, gutter-guard materials, roof flashing, or even the composition of runoff from certain roofing materials. Florida's environment makes this worse than most: the National Ocean Service notes that airborne salt in coastal areas measurably accelerates corrosion of metal, and much of Pinellas County sits within a few miles of the water. Identifying the Source of Gutter Rust Staining

Pressure washing alone will not remove rust staining — the iron oxide is chemically bonded to the surface it's stained into, and high pressure only spreads it or damages the substrate.

The Chemistry of Rust Stain Removal

Rust stains on concrete, stucco, and exterior surfaces are iron oxide deposits — not mechanical damage to the surface itself. They can be chemically removed using oxalic acid-based or buffered acid chemistry that converts the iron oxide to a water-soluble compound that rinses away. This chemistry, applied professionally at appropriate concentration and with proper neutralization after treatment, removes rust staining without damaging the underlying concrete, stucco, or painted surface. Consumer rust removers available at hardware stores are the same chemistry at lower concentration and with less precise application control.
