Soft Washing Natural Wood Siding in Florida: The Only Method That Doesn't Cause Damage

  • Grain raising: Pressure forces water into the wood fiber faster than the fiber can absorb and equalize. The rapid swelling raises and separates the wood grain, creating a rough, fuzzy surface texture that no sanding can fully restore to a smooth baseline.
  • Paint and stain stripping: High-pressure water strips existing exterior finish from wood far more readily than from concrete or stucco. Leaving raw wood exposed in Florida's climate accelerates decay dramatically.
  • Lap joint and board-end water infiltration: High-pressure water enters between lap siding boards, at end grain cuts, and through any existing cracks, forcing moisture into the wall structure beneath. This moisture promotes rot in the underlying sheathing and framing — structural damage that costs thousands to repair.
  • Furring out: Repeated high-pressure cleaning pushes fasteners and accelerates the movement of boards that are already showing any looseness.

The Soft Wash Process for Natural Wood Siding

Soft washing reverses this damage dynamic entirely. Rather than relying on mechanical force, it uses chemistry to kill the biological growth at the root and lets a gentle rinse carry it away. The process for natural wood siding:

  • Biodegradable cleaning solution — at the appropriate concentration for the level of biological contamination and wood surface type — applied at low pressure (under 200 PSI) using soft wash application equipment
  • Dwell period of roughly 10 to 20 minutes while the chemistry penetrates biological growth and kills organisms at the root level
  • Light pre-rinse to remove killed surface contamination without forcing water into wood joints
  • For stained or gray wood: application of wood brightener (sodium percarbonate) to oxidize embedded tannins and UV-damaged surface wood, restoring the natural wood color
  • Final gentle rinse to remove all chemistry and dead biological material

Wood Species and Cleaning Approach in Florida

That gives you a clean, protected surface heading into the humid months and a natural break to reapply stain or sealer if the wood needs it. Most Florida wood-sided homes benefit from soft washing once a year; heavily shaded homes or those under a live oak canopy that drips tannins may need attention every eight to ten months. Keeping the siding clean is not only cosmetic — removing mold and algae before they root into the grain is one of the most effective ways to extend the service life of the wood and delay the far larger expense of siding replacement.
